Voxel Weight Transfer

Voxel Weight Transfer

Dress a rigged character, one click per garment. The outfit takes the body's skin weights and shape keys through voxels, so it moves with the body even where the cloth hangs away from the skin.

Weight transfer breaks where the cloth leaves the body: the usual transfer copies the nearest skin point, right where the cloth touches and a guess everywhere else. Voxel Weight Transfer fills the space between skin and cloth with voxels and lets the weights flow through it. The outfit moves like the body, and the fixing afterwards is gone.

ONE CLICK PER GARMENT
Sources and targets
Body in Sources, clothes in To Dress, press Transfer Weights. The next garment is already lined up.

Why voxels
Copying from the nearest skin point guesses wherever the cloth leaves the body. Voxels fill the gap and the weights flow through it: a hem rests between both legs, a loose cuff follows the forearm inside it.
Layer by layer
Innermost first, sorted for you. Each dressed garment becomes a source for the next, so a coat over a shirt moves like a coat over a shirt.
Coats run coarse, gloves run fine
The resolution is picked per garment: a coat runs fast, a glove runs fine enough for each finger to land on its own bone.
Any rig
Maya rig, game rig, Rigify, Auto-Rig Pro or hand-built. Bone don't matter.
YOU STAY IN CONTROL
Influences follow the body
A garment uses as many bones per vertex as the body. A body limited to four for a game engine gives every garment at four.
Rigid for props
A helmet, a ring or a pauldron goes on one bone, the nearest one picked for you.

Only the bones you pick
Rewrite the selected bones only. Leave the leg bones out and a skirt takes none of them.
WHERE IT IS USED
VRChat and VRM avatars
Ordinary vertex groups and an Armature modifier, so the outfit exports like any Blender character: FBX or VRM for Unity and VRChat, four influences when the body has four.
Roblox characters
Clothes fitted on a Roblox rig take the body's weights the same way, ready for the Roblox tools.
GTA V and Skyrim outfit mods
An outfit fitted to the game's body takes that body's weights in one transfer, then goes through the modding tools you already use.
Your own characters
It needs a body that already has weights. Adaptive Auto Skinning gives it one.
