Let’s Talk About AI on Superhive (and What It Means for You)
We've published our AI Policy for Superhive. This policy outlines how AI is permitted to appear in products on Superhive. It also covers some of the third-party services we use to operate the platform.
The topic of AI is one that would make a Mandalorian keep their helmet on. However, this topic is worth talking about and figuring out together. If we can do that, then we can help foster and elevate creatives and creativity in the Blender community for decades to come. ❤️
Our intention with this policy is not to draw a line in the sand. AI tools have permeated all of our lives. Because of that, we wanted to give customers a better understanding of what to look for when browsing products on the site. And for creators, they need guidelines on what's acceptable (and what isn't) when they're submitting products to the site.
What you might see on product pages while browsing
Some products on Superhive use AI as a part of their process, or perhaps as part of their core offering. The flavors of this are endless, but what matters is that the final product always includes meaningful human creativity and craftsmanship.
When shopping, here are a few things to notice:
- Transparency: Creators are strongly encouraged, especially when AI played a significant role in shaping the product.to mention how AI tools were used in the creation of their product, and to disclose this on the product page. For example, "Basemesh generated with AI, and then fully retopologized, rigged, and textured by hand". These disclosures help you understand the process and make an informed decision about your purchase for your use case.
- Human involvement: Products that rely heavily on AI without meaningful human work aren’t allowed on Superhive. We do our best to review and curate products on the site, though understand that some will slip through. If you see this, please notify us at [email protected]
- Exceptions to have remote services: Superhive typically does not allow products that rely on 3rd-party services to function, and products should never ask for or require payment outside of Superhive, with a few exceptions. While local AI model processing is preferred, some existing tools do require API calls to function. In rare cases, these approved products will clearly state their remote off-site requirements and have signed an exception agreement with Supehive.
Why did we create this policy?
Our AI Policy exists with the intention of communicating and protecting the creative integrity of the marketplace, and to give you, the customer, confidence in what you're buying. It sets guidelines for creators and gives us a shared framework for handling this evolving technology thoughtfully together.
If you’re ever unsure about a product’s use of AI or notice something that seems off, you can reach out to [email protected]. Our review team is happy to take a closer look.
In closing
We'll likely see AI continue to change the creative landscape, but we're still betting on people. The creativity and craft of humans is the throughline through all technological advancements. Our hope is that this policy is a helpful framework, a starting place for us in the Blender community.
Superhive, a project of Autotroph, has been honored to be part of the Blender community for more than a decade, and while it's a bit out of our shell to talk about how we work, why we work, I hope this is a step in that direction. If you're curious about our full origin story, read that here.
Thanks for reading, take care of each other, and happy Blending! ❤️
