3Z Axis in Modeling

šŸ“˜ Mesh CleanUp Tool

Mesh CleanUp ToolĀ is a powerful Blender add-on designed to simplify and accelerate your mesh cleanup workflow. Whether you're preparing models for game engines, 3D printing, or asset delivery, this tool provides one-click cleanup solutions and in-depth mesh analysis directly in Edit Mode.

🧭 Getting Started

  1. Install the Add-on:

    • Go toĀ Edit > Preferences > Add-ons

    • ClickĀ Install...Ā and select theĀ .zipĀ

Enable the checkbox next toĀ Mesh CleanUp Tool

  2. Access the Tool:

    • EnterĀ Edit ModeĀ (TabĀ key)

    • PressĀ Shift + MĀ or search forĀ "Advanced Mesh Cleanup"Ā in the F3 menu

🧼 Cleanup Options

šŸ”¹Ā Remove Doubles

  • Merges overlapping or duplicate vertices based on a set merge distance.

  • AdjustableĀ Merge DistanceĀ slider for precision control.

šŸ”¹Ā Dissolve Degenerate

  • Removes tiny, zero-area faces and unnecessary edges automatically.

šŸ”¹Ā Delete Loose Geometry

  • Allows deletion of:

    • Loose verticesĀ (not connected to any edge)

    • Loose edgesĀ (not part of any face)

    • Isolated faces

šŸ”¹Ā Dissolve Redundant Geometry

  • Automatically dissolves:

    • VerticesĀ connected to only two edges that lie in a straight line.

    • EdgesĀ that don’t affect mesh shape, based on a customizableĀ angle threshold.

šŸ”¹Ā Recalculate Normals

  • Rebuilds face normals for consistent shading.

  • OptionalĀ flip normalsĀ toggle for correcting reversed normals.

šŸ” Analysis & Selection

After cleanup, the tool can automaticallyĀ select problem areasĀ for inspection:

  • Non-Manifold Edges

  • Non-Planar FacesĀ (with threshold control)

  • Triangles (Tris)

  • N-Gons (faces with 5+ edges)

You can also enableĀ "View Selected"Ā to focus the viewport on the detected areas.

āš™ļø Settings Summary

Setting Description

Delete Loose Remove disconnected elements
Recalculate Normals Fix shading direction
Select Type Highlight geometry issues
View Selected Focus on selected problems

šŸŽÆ Use Cases

  • Game asset preparation

  • Fixing imports from CAD or other DCCs

  • Reducing geometry for performance

  • 3D print prep & error checking

  • Technical and hard surface modeling

šŸ’” Tips & Best Practices

  • Combine this tool withĀ Auto MergeĀ andĀ Snap to VertexĀ for retopology workflows.

  • UseĀ View SelectedĀ to quickly inspect large, complex meshes.

  • Fine-tuneĀ angle thresholdĀ to control how aggressively edges and verts are dissolved.

ā“ Troubleshooting

Q:Ā The tool doesn’t appear when I press Shift+M?
A:Ā Make sure you are inĀ Edit Mode, and that your selected object is a mesh.

Q:Ā Nothing seems to happen after clicking "Execute Cleanup"?
A:Ā There may be nothing to clean. Try enabling selection of problem areas to confirm.
