Default Cube: The Game

Spencer Magnusson in Interface

Default Cube finally has its revenge

You start a new project. All your followers are expecting another tutorial or timelapse.

But the real question is: what to do with the cube. Do you keep it? Delete and immediately re-add it, as per tradition? Or delete it forever?

.

Because if you delete the cube for good with this game, be warned: it will haunt you. As you work on your project, the session will be different. The user interface may randomly not work as you expect. Your scene will change. Maybe you'll even hear the default cube speak.

This is the experience of "Default Cube: The Game," a native Blender add-on.

Why Make This?

Because it's spooky, funny, and all in good fun! But really, some users may enjoy a more chaotic experience, especially those who record or livestream their work. Helps keep viewers entertained, and artists on their toes.

We've all struggled with Blender, maybe to the point of paranoia that it's somehow working against us. Why not make that true? 😝

And I loved the challenge of making a game within a native Blender add-on.

Add-on Features

  • 12 kinds of haunted events triggered during your session, from the cube "speaking beyond the grave", to pop-ups of images. From loud sounds to the user interface itself changing. See the product documentation page for a full list of haunts (at the risk of spoiling yourself some).
  • Non-destructive by design. The only thing the add-on saves to your file is which object is (at least initially) the default cube, if it still exists (and why would you do that?). Otherwise, nothing else is saved to your file. Haunts clean up after themselves so nothing is permanently changed. Auto-save is paused during haunts (which all last less than thirty seconds) in the odd case that something crashes.
  • Start and end the game anytime. The game automatically ends when a new file is opened or win condition is met.

For Content Creators and Livestreamers

  • Let viewers guess what the cube will do next, increasing engagement to an otherwise passive viewing.
  • Laugh or jump as randomized haunts affect the viewing (and Blender-ing) experience.
  • Adjust delay between haunts, and even customize the haunts themselves, so they can be tailored to your audience.
  • Import and export haunt assets, so you can share your own scares or jokes with other creators
  • The add-on automatically waits for modal operations to finish to prevent concurrency issues. However, if you wish for other add-ons to run continuously in the background, you can turn that safety off. While I do what I can preventatively, I am not responsible for how other add-ons affect the game.

After purchase and download, enable the add-on, and press play. Share the moments you love and, if you enjoy going in blind, please avoid spoiling the secrets for others. Good luck.
