Advantages

A real time saver and a solid alternative to volumetric clouds – without the GPU memory worries. You can quickly build entire cloud seas, and with a little tweaking of the node shader, the results look surprisingly realistic.

Limitations

They won't replace hyper-realistic VDB clouds, and yes, they're planes, thin like slices of cheese. But from experience, it's mostly a matter of camera angle. Front view works best.
Colour won't react dynamically to your scene either, but that's exactly what the built node shader is for. At the end of the day, knowing how to fake it is just part of being a creative 3D artist.
