Procedural & Texture Snow Shader

Update:

December 2025: Improved shader. Added color option, refined sparkle glow.

For snow scenes and cold season renderings a good shader is essential.

Good snow shaders have many nodes, which means that the entire node group becomes very complex and confusing. It's no fun at all having to wade through all the nodes if you want to work with this shader on a different day and in a different project, especially if you want to make some changes to a particular node.

This is why I prefer to use a simplified and one clear node Shader with easy changeable sliders.

Two shaders for more flexibility

I love to work with procedural textures but there is nothing like put real textures for achieving more realism. I'v created two groups for different types of using. Mostly I take the texture snow shader and use the procedural options there. For stunning results I recommending you to use displacement textures.
By the different sliders you can very easy fitting the shader for your scene and needs.

little details. big differents

One of the charachteristics of snow are the little shiny details known as snow sparkles. You can change the size, the amount and the visibility of these little spots by changing the slides.

Good to know

  • Use Eevee for faster viewport feedback in complex scenes.
  • Increase subdivision and enable micro displacement for maximum detail.
  • Switch the displacement method to Displacement and Bump.
  • The second shader allows easy replacement with your own textures.
