What is Shot Sculpting?

Shot Sculpting or Tech Anim (as it is also known by) is a major step within the Animation and VFX industry that allows you to quickly adjust or enhance an animation on the go. Everybody loves a good character rig but it is not always practical or cost-effective to rig your characters for every conceivable pose that you may come across in a show. By having the ability to blend-in specific sculpt layers at certain points in time, shot sculpting allows you to finish your shot in a timely manner and have it look great too!

Use Cases

Even when a rigging update is the optimal choice, you may be in instances where the rigging artist is too busy to make an update. Thus the best course of action then is shot sculpting. Additionally, shot sculpting can be extremely useful when you need to animate anatomical features but you don't have time or the budget for muscle/tissue simulation.

This method is also great for adjusting already pre-cached simulations such as cloth or tissue setups. At the end of a long cloth sim perhaps you notice some slight interpenetration into your collision mesh. Instead of resimming the cloth again and possibly having an even worse issue, it may be more prudent to smooth out those problem areas by doing shot sculpting on a baked-down version of the cache.
