Starfield Generator V1 - hyper efficient & customisable star fields
Starfield Generator is a powerful new addon that makes creating volumes of stars a breeze, simply select any shape target object and adjust the parameters, no spaghetti clusters of nodes, just a clean panel with only the info you need. In the video above two-hundred-thousand stars were generated, using a high clumping setting and high poly stars. (set the video to 1080p to minimise the awfulness of Youtube's compression)
Highly efficient - it can make scenes that have hundreds of thousands of stars without crashing your system.

Control the amount of clustering - from completely uniform distribution when disabled, to galaxy-like clustering when set to 100.

By default the colouring of the stars will match what normal deep-space images look like, a nice balance of red to blue, but if enables, the red/blue bias controller will let you stylise it the way you want.

Size control, by default all the stars are the same size, as in real life the visibility is more determined by brightness, but if you're going for a more stylised approach, that is accommodated for.

It works with any shape manifold (think "sealed") mesh, like this torus:

The above renders were made with these compositing node settings:
