Real yarn, not a texture. Select a mesh, click one button, get a knitted object.
Wool Generator builds actual yarn from thousands of individual twisted fibers with Geometry Nodes. Stitches interlock row by row like a real stockinette knit, a fine halo of fuzz stands off the surface, and the whole fabric can grow in procedurally. No simulation, no baked textures, nothing to unwrap.
What you get
- Interlocking Knit Lattice. Rows of V stitches that lock together column by column, projected on any closed, roughly star-shaped mesh: characters, scans, sculpts, props. Stitch Aspect and Stitch Roundness tune the look.
- Realistic fuzz. Fine, curved, tapered hairs with Fuzz Amount, Length and Curl controls. Switch it off to save memory.
- Wool material included. Per-fiber brightness variation, lighter fiber tips, soft sheen and subsurface. Works in Cycles.
- 9 look presets that fit your model. Fine, Classic, Chunky and Mega Knit, Fuzzy Mohair Knit, Chunky Braided Yarn, Fuzzy Mohair, Flat Ribbon Knit, Hand-spun Rope. Sizes are relative to the mesh, so they work at any scale.
- Procedural growth animation. One Growth slider (0 to 1) grows the fabric yarn by yarn: along an axis, spreading out from an Empty, or randomly. One click keyframes it.
- Real fibers. Radius, spread, twist, twist variation, slubs, waviness, fray and tapered tips.
- Smart colors. Solid, 3-color palette, colors sampled from your model's texture through its UVs, or from a color attribute. Per-fiber and per-yarn variation.
- Three layouts. Knit Lattice (organic meshes), Surface Stitches (any mesh, crochet look) and Mesh Edges (regular quad meshes).
- Light on memory. Draft / Standard / High quality presets and a reduced-fiber viewport.
- Bake to Mesh. Tube geometry with vertex colors for GLB / FBX export, with a live vertex estimate.
- Paintable density, multiple wool objects per scene, clean sidebar panel with tooltips.
Case studies
All renders were made with this add-on, in Cycles, without any compositing.
1. Knitted character with a growth animation. A subdivided Suzanne with the Classic Knit preset: about 149k curve points at Standard quality. Growth is keyframed from 0 to 1 over 100 frames, so the knit grows from the neck up to the ears. Setup: select the mesh, click Wool from Selection, pick the preset, click Animate Growth.
2. Chunky striped ball with colors from the model's texture. A UV sphere with the Chunky Knit preset and Colors from Model Texture. The stripes come straight from the sphere's image texture, with no manual color setup. About 39k curve points.
3. Braided donut. A torus with the Chunky Braided Yarn preset: long braided rows with fuzz.
Requirements
- Blender 5.2 LTS or newer
- Tested with Cycles
Good to know
- Knit Lattice shoots rays from the object's center, so it fits closed, roughly star-shaped meshes. For shapes with holes (a torus, a handle) use Mesh Edges or Surface Stitches.
- Chunky and Mega Knit look best on smooth, large shapes. Fine and Classic Knit cope better with rough surfaces.
- High fiber counts mean dense geometry. The viewport uses a reduced fiber count; for baked meshes start with 4-6 fibers per yarn.
- Colors from a texture need a valid UV map on the source mesh.
What's included
- Wool Generator extension (.zip), installable via Edit > Preferences > Get Extensions > Install from Disk
- WoolGenerator_Examples.blend: 3 finished, different wool setups, ready to render
- Documentation (README with the full parameter reference)
How it works
- Install the extension and open the Wool tab (N panel).
- Select one or more meshes and click Wool from Selection.
- Choose a Look Preset. Tweak sliders, or click Colors from Model Texture.
- Render. For game export use Bake to Mesh.
FAQ
Does it work on any mesh? On any closed, roughly star-shaped mesh with Knit Lattice, and on any mesh at all with Surface Stitches.
Is it a simulation? No. It is procedural: the result is deterministic and the growth is just a slider.
Can I use it for games? Use Bake to Mesh, then export GLB/FBX. Keep fibers low for real-time.
Which renderer? Cycles is tested.
