Worldforge: Advanced Terrain Generator
Documentation
Base Plane Generation
This one-click feature generates a flat plane to use for your sculpting work or to apply procedural effects to. Set the size, in meters, as well as the number of subdivisions, and the plane will spawn.
You can use the Sculpt button to instantly enter Blender's sculpting mode to refine your landscape.
Heightmap Data Import and Instant Satellite Images
You'll find a dropdown menu with a variety of preset locations. Importing one of them is as easy as picking a location and selecting Fetch SRTM Terrain. This will spawn in the terrain. Tune the Z Multiplier (sets the height of the terrain), Mesh Size, in meters, and Subdivisions to get the results you need.
You can also enter your own bounding box coordinates or set a point and radius to import your own landscape from anywhere in the world. Note that the best data are available from latitudes -56 to 60 - roughly equivalent to the area from the bottom of Tierra Del Fuego to Copenhagen.
Fetch Satellite Imagery will automatically import satellite images and apply them as a texture to the selected landscape using the same coordinates used to generate it. The satellite imagery fetched will be whichever you used last.
Fetch High-Res 10m imports high-resolution Sentinel-2 imagery for the selected landscape region. This is a composite image that features no clouds and is the best choice for base textures.
Users who want more advanced control over satellite imagery should use the dedicated satellite imagery feature of the addon.
Procedural Terrain
To generate procedural terrain, select a mesh - typically a Base Plane - to which to apply the landscape noise transformation. There are a series of available presets, or you can uncheck the Use Presets button to access the underlying noise layers and features like seed numbers and falloff.
Probably the single biggest thing you can do to improve the results you get from this addon is to experiment with different kinds of procedural terrain.
Note that a mesh must be selected to apply Procedural Terrain features.
Composition
Blend multiple terrain meshes to compose a landscape to your own specifications. From the dropdown, choose from Minimum, Maximum, Average, Sum, Multiply, and SDF Smooth Union. Tune the resolution, size, and height of the composed landscape to your specifications.
Texture and Material Attributes
Simulation
It's in the Texture and Material Attributes panel that the simulation features of WorldForge live. Select your landscape (or any other) mesh and press Compute Terrain Attributes. Select an attribute (e.g. snow) and color palette and select Apply Attribute Material to visualize the simulation in the Material Preview rendering panel. Or, press Bake to Vertex Group to use the simulation data for weight painting. You can develop your own materials or Geo Nodes using simulation data by introducing named attributes in each of those panels.
Advanced Panel: Tune the values underlying the simulations, like sun, wind, climate, snow, and vegetation features. You must press Compute Terrain Attributes again to see your changes.
Satellite Imagery
In the Layer dropdown, select the satellite layer that you wish to fetch, as well as the pixel resolution and whether you want the imagery to be applied as a material. Press Fetch Satellite Imagery to instantly import the data. For some frequently-updated layers, you may have to select a date associated with your satellite imagery for which data are available.
