AO Connector
What is AO Connector?
AO Connector is an automated Blender addon that simplifies the process of adding Ambient Occlusion (AO) to materials. It intelligently detects your material setup and automatically creates the proper node connections to enhance depth and realism in your 3D models by adding subtle shadows in crevices and contact points.
Where can I find the AO Connector panel in Blender?
The AO Connector panel is located in the Properties panel under the Material tab. Once installed, you'll see the "AO Connector" section with collapsible categories including Actions, Preview, AO Properties, Utilities, and Special Toggles.
Does AO Connector work with any type of material?
AO Connector works with materials that use a Principled BSDF shader with node-based setups. It can handle both simple procedural materials and complex PBR (Physically Based Rendering) materials with multiple texture maps. The addon intelligently detects Base Color, ORM (Occlusion/Roughness/Metallic), and separate AO textures.
Will AO Connector work with multiple selected objects at once?
Yes! One of AO Connector's key features is batch processing. You can select multiple objects and apply AO to all their materials simultaneously with a single click. This is a huge time-saver when working with complex scenes containing many objects.
Can I adjust the AO settings after applying it?
Yes! AO Connector provides real-time adjustable parameters including:
Distance (0.01-10.0): Controls how far the AO effect reaches
Samples (1-128): Affects quality and render time
Intensity (0.0-1.0): Controls the contrast/strength of the effect
Shadow Color: Allows you to tint the AO shadows
All changes update in real-time on selected objects.
What does the "AO Preview Toggle" do?
The AO Preview Toggle allows you to quickly turn the ambient occlusion effect on and off in the viewport without removing the nodes. This is useful for comparing your scene with and without AO to see the visual impact, or for faster viewport performance when needed.
What is the "Lock AO" feature and when should I use it?
The Lock AO feature prevents the addon from modifying a specific material's AO setup. This is useful when you've manually customized the AO nodes for a particular material and want to protect those changes from being overwritten. You can lock the active material individually or unlock all materials on selected objects at once.
How does AO Connector handle ORM textures?
AO Connector is smart enough to detect ORM (Occlusion/Roughness/Metallic) packed textures commonly used in PBR workflows. It automatically extracts the Red channel (Occlusion) using a Separate Color node and combines it with the procedural AO node, giving you the best of both texture-based and ray-traced ambient occlusion.
Does adding AO significantly increase render times?
The Ambient Occlusion node does add computational cost, especially in Cycles renderer. However, AO Connector provides controls to balance quality and performance:
Lower Samples values render faster but may appear noisy
The Distance parameter can be reduced to limit calculation range
Use Only Local to exclude inter-object calculations
The Preview Toggle lets you disable AO during iterative work
Can AO Connector work with separate AO texture maps?
Absolutely! The addon can detect standalone AO texture maps and intelligently combine them with the procedural AO node using multiply blending. This gives you enhanced ambient occlusion that leverages both your baked AO textures and real-time ray-traced occlusion.
What happens to my original material if I remove AO?
AO Connector stores your original material connections before making any changes. When you use "Remove AO," the addon completely removes all AO-related nodes and restores your original Base Color connections exactly as they were before. Your material returns to its pre-AO state without any manual cleanup required.
Are there codes available for content creators ?
Yes! If you're an online content creator or influencer looking to use AO Connector for commercial purposes, promotional content, or YouTube tutorials, I'd love to support your work. Please reach out to [email protected] and request a sponsorship code. This is my way of supporting the Blender community and helping talented artists expand their reach while using professional tools.
