AtmosRay — Cinematic Fog, God Rays & Atmosphere Director

AtmosRay 2.1 for Blender

The atmosphere director for Blender

Most fog add-ons drop a cube with a volume shader into your scene and wish you luck. AtmosRay directs the atmosphere for the shot — it reads your camera, protects your existing lighting, and gives you film-set controls instead of shader math.

Pick a mood. Set two sliders. Click Create Best Setup. Done.

New in 2.1

Custom dust shapes. Dust motes can now be your own images, a mesh or a whole collection. Mix up to eight pictures (flakes, fibres, ash specks) and set how often each one turns up. Image motes always face the camera and turn slowly as they drift.

Image fog planes. Put your own fog or smoke picture on a fog card. It keeps its proportions, takes the colour tint and drifts with the style you pick, and Breakup sets how much the moving noise breaks it up. Image cards can be volumetric too.

Fog cards that look like fog. A Heavy card is now a real cloud bank and Whisper a few faint wisps. Cards take light from the ray sun, and in Cycles a card between the camera and the sun glows through.

More motion, fewer surprises. Turbulence now reaches 10, a new Swirl Speed sets how lively the swirl is, and Ray Doctor catches a Fog Start that leaves the fog volume empty.

Atmosphere

Shot-Lock Engine
The fog volume is fitted to your camera frustum and follows animated cameras — while the fog pattern stays anchored to the world. No fog left behind on camera moves, no "fog swimming with the camera." Cinematics are camera moves; AtmosRay is built for them.
Real-world density
Set Visibility in meters — like a cinematographer orders haze — not an abstract 0.02 density number. Koschmieder's law does the physics for you.
16 mood presets + custom presets
Dust Through Blinds, Morning Mist, Dusty Warehouse, Cathedral Rays, Forest God Rays, Neon Noir, Golden Hour Haze, Horror Fog, Arctic Whiteout, Desert Heat Haze, Ocean Spray, Twilight Blue Hour, Smoke Room, Autumn Morning, Volcanic Ash, Sci-Fi Haze — each with thumbnail preview gallery. Save your own looks as named presets that persist across projects.
Living atmosphere
Wind drift, boiling churn, height-based mist, near/far depth staging, a subject "clarity window," and Physical Volume interactors that carve moving clearings around objects (parent one to a car and drive through the fog).

Light

Scene-Safe Lighting (Cycles and EEVEE)
The ray sun is light-linked to the atmosphere only. Drop AtmosRay into a finished, lit scene — archviz, product shots, anything — and your surface lighting does not change at all. Blockers shadow only the ray sun. This is the feature that lets you add atmosphere at the end of a project instead of re-lighting it.
Physical and Match Existing
When you want the light to touch the scene, Physical lets one sun create coherent surface shadows and volumetric shafts, and Match Existing reads a sun already in your scene without changing it. Real windows, blinds, foliage and architecture can shape the rays.
Ray Cards
Crisp, noise-free light shafts layered over the real fog, through the openings in your blocker pattern and the gobo cone. They stop where your scene blocks the light, and in EEVEE they cost almost nothing.
Gobo Projector
A spot light that carries its pattern in the light itself — window grids, blinds, swaying foliage dapples, leaded-glass cells — projected through the fog with zero blocker geometry.
Shadow Haze and backlight aims
A faint cool tone where the light does not reach, so the shadows between warm rays read as haze instead of black. Three-quarter backlight aims send shafts diagonally across the frame.

Detail

FogPlanes — 64 flowmap fog cards
Production-style fog cards with a real flowmap shader: Perlin-Worley billows, detail erosion (wisps, not chunks), domain-warped swirl, and directional flow you control per card. Sprite mode for near-free layering; Volumetric card mode turns any card into a thin true-volume slab that god rays pass through. Works in Cycles and EEVEE.
Dust motes
GN-powered drifting dust that sparkles only inside the light beams (emergent from Scene-Safe light linking — just like real dust). Wind-coupled, seamlessly recycling, no baking. Spheres by default, or your own images, a mesh or a whole collection.
Cinematic Finish
Glow, film halation, vignette and grain in one optional compositor pass. Nothing touches your compositor until you apply it, and Restore puts it back exactly as it was.
Reversible photographic treatment
Apply a long-normal lens, depth of field, focus target, widescreen aspect and exposure for the hero shot. AtmosRay snapshots every setting it touches and restores it on demand or on removal.

Workflow

A scene-aware first click
Create Best Setup reuses your selected sun, or the strongest enabled sun when there are several, so you never end up with a second sun. If the scene has no usable sun, it adds a Scene-Safe atmosphere light and a blocker pattern, then opens a rendered viewport preview for an immediate result.
Ray Doctor
Can't see rays? One click diagnoses the real causes — missing medium, flat scattering, front-lit sun, hidden blockers, engine settings — and offers one-click fixes. The add-on debugs your atmosphere for you.
Per-shot camera profiles
Save a complete atmosphere per camera. With marker-bound cameras, every cut applies that shot's look automatically — during playback and renders. One scene, many shots, each graded.

Depth of engineering you can trust

One managed rig — repeated clicks update, never duplicate. Remove restores your scene to byte-identical render settings with zero leftover datablocks.

20 automated test suites run headless on every release, on Windows, macOS and Linux: rig lifecycle, camera-lock behaviour, light-linking isolation (pixel-verified), determinism, Ray Doctor scenarios, EEVEE compatibility, dust shapes and fog cards.

Master on/off switch + per-system toggles. Everything non-destructive.
