โ Does it support the Steam version of Substance Painter?
Yes! It works with both the Adobe standalone installer, Creative Cloud versions, and Steam versions. You just need to point the Blender preferences to your Adobe Substance 3D Painter.exe located inside your Steam directory (e.g., C:/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/...).
โ Does it support Unreal ORM / Unity URP export presets?
Yes, built in. BakeBridge supports Standard PBR, Unreal (Packed ORM), and Unity URP (Metallic Standard). Pick your target preset in the Blender N-Panel, and the bridge configures Substance Painter's export naming and packing automatically, while Blender's shader importer routes the packed channels correctly.
โ Can I use BakeBridge on an asset without the naming convention?
The naming convention is required for detection, the first run needs matching suffix pairs (_l/_h, _low/_high, _lp/_hp, or _lowpoly/_highpoly) so BakeBridge can sort meshes into Low Poly/High Poly collections. These get normalized internally to _low and _high for Substance Painter's name matching.
Once the collections are created, you can technically rename the meshes, but this isn't advised. Substance Painter matches low and high poly pairs by name, so renaming after the fact can break that match.
โ Will I lose my layers when updating meshes?
Absolutely not. BakeBridge uses Substance Painterโs native, non-destructive mesh reload engine. When you edit your low-poly mesh in Blender and click "Run BakeBridge" again, it updates the geometry in Substance Painter but preserves all your layers and folders.
โ What happens if I close Substance Painter without exporting?
Nothing is lost. BakeBridge auto-saves your .spp project file in the source/ folder, so your Blender scene stays unaffected. Click Run BakeBridge again anytime to reopen the project and resume where you left off.
โ What if I have multiple Blender windows open at the same time?
If you have Blender already open with the correct project file, the Substance Painter plugin will write the manifest, and the open window will instantly auto-import the textures. It will not launch a new Blender window if the correct file is already open.
โHow does the Blender background watcher work? Does it slow down Blender?
๏ปฟNo, it's extremely lightweight. The background watcher runs on a silent 1-second Blender timer that only checks if a small file (texture_manifest.json) exists in your project's textures folder. The check has negligible performance cost and has zero impact on Blender's viewport or CPU performance.
โ Is it safe to use on macOS or Linux?
Yes. The codebase uses Python's pathlib and platform-agnostic scripting, so it's built to run on macOS and Linux. As a solo developer on Windows hardware, active testing has only been done on Windows. If you hit an OS-specific bug, please open an issue on GitHub, I actively work through reported bugs.
โ Does BakeBridge support UDIMs?
Not in v1.0.0. BakeBridge currently supports standard single-tile UV layouts. Full UDIM support is on the roadmap for a future update.
