01 · DOWNLOAD

Download Blender Chat

Save blender-chat.zip to your computer. Leave the ZIP compressed.

02 · INSTALL IN BLENDER

Install the add-on ZIP

Open Edit → Preferences → Add-ons. Open the dropdown at the top right, choose Install from Disk, and select the ZIP. Then enable Blender Chat.

03 · INSTALL CODEX

Run Setup → Install Codex

Expand Blender Chat’s preferences and select Setup → Install Codex. Complete the installer. If Codex is already installed, skip this step.

04 · SIGN IN

Sign into Codex

Open Codex and sign in with your own ChatGPT account.

05 · RETURN TO BLENDER

Blender Chat connects automatically

Return to Blender after signing in. If Blender Chat has not connected, click Retry assistant connection, or restart Blender. You can close the Codex desktop window once setup is complete.

06 · CODEX DESKTOP APP

Connect Codex for desktop control

Click Setup → Connect Codex, then complete the companion installation in Codex. Start a new Codex task to use it.

Optional: This step is only needed to control Blender from the Codex desktop app. Chat inside Blender already has its connection. If the button does not open Codex, use Copy companion setup link on the same computer.

07 · START CHATTING

Open a scene and ask

Open or save your .blend, then click the glowing “Ask about this scene…” bar.

Start with Tell me what is selected without changing anything.
Then try Create a simple low-poly chair beside the selected object.

Open the prompt toolkit when you do not want to start from a blank box. The 36 included tools are grouped by the kind of Blender work you are doing.

BlenderChat is not only sending text back and forth. Its Blender-specific backend gives the AI structured tools and scene context so it can work more directly with your project.

Reads the targetCaptures your active objects, selections, faces, UVs, materials, rig and current frame so “this” has useful meaning.
Uses Blender toolsMaterial, UV, rig, image, asset, render, checkpoint and other workflows are exposed as purpose-built operations instead of relying only on generated code.

10 · GIVE IT CONTEXT

Select first. Then ask.

For precise edits, select the object, faces, vertices, rig, image, or region first. Right Click and hit Add that selection to chat so BlenderChat knows what should change.

MaterialsSelect faces, then ask for color, roughness, or surface changes.
Weights & rigsSelect the problem area and ask BlenderChat to inspect or refine it.
ImagesAttach images or place generated images into the scene as planes.

Point BlenderChat at your asset locations so it can index your existing .blend files and reuse your models, collections, and materials

13 · QUICK FIXES

If something doesn’t work

Chat won’t connectConfirm Codex is installed, you are signed in, and your account can access the required model.
Selection stopped workingRe-select the target and attach it to chat again.
