What does Aseprite Bridge do?

It connects Blender textures to your installed Aseprite application. Send an image or a 2D texturing document with material maps and a UV guide, paint in Aseprite, and return the result to Blender. It also provides live updates, a Blender-generated preview inside Aseprite, frame or sprite-sheet exports, palette exchange and named-layer map imports.

Do I need Aseprite, and which versions are declared?

You need your own Aseprite 1.3 or newer on Windows; Aseprite is not included. Legacy Blender metadata declares a 3.3 minimum and the Extension manifest a 4.2 minimum. The supplied filename/docs state 3.3–5.2, but no exact tested-build matrix accompanies the package. macOS and Linux are not supported by the supplied Windows workflow.

Which ZIP should I install, and is there an Aseprite component?

Use universal_bridge_aseprite-1.0.6-blender3.3-5.2.zip once. Avoid enabling duplicate copies of this bridge. Enable Universal Bridge: Aseprite in Blender, use Install / Update Aseprite Extension, and restart Aseprite. The ZIP includes Blender source, the companion Lua extension and DOCUMENTATION.md. There is no separate Manager installer in this supplied package.

Where are the controls after installation?

The Viewport Card is enabled by default in the 3D Viewport and hides the duplicate sidebar panel. Disable Viewport Card in add-on preferences, or use its top-right switch, to use the sidebar instead. Press N and open the Aseprite tab for the standalone bridge. With Universal Bridge Manager active, look under Universal Bridge. The texture picker is Draw on the card and Texture in the fallback panel.

Why did my texture not update?

Choose the intended image in Draw/Texture before sending. Without a selected destination, a returned image can arrive as a new image without updating the intended material. Check the Image Texture node, its image and the writable file path. Stop Live Sync, select a copied test texture, and try a manual Get Sprite before continuing.

Can Get or Live Sync overwrite my texture file?

Yes. Aseprite exports a scratch copy, but Blender can then write the returned pixels into the selected image’s existing file in its own format. Keep backups and verify the destination before enabling Live Sync. Do not rely on Blender Undo to restore external file writes. For an image without its own path, inspect the created texture path and save the project before treating it as a permanent asset.

How do Live Sync and pixel filtering work?

On Save sends when you save in Aseprite; While You Draw schedules updates after edits. Min Gap limits update frequency. A first Send/Get may start sync unless you previously stopped it manually. Switch Live Sync off to stop automatic returns. Returned images have referencing Image Texture nodes set to Closest interpolation. Sync still uses timers and file processing; it is not a zero-overhead operation.

Is the 3D preview rendered inside Aseprite?

Blender generates an OpenGL viewport capture and a real Aseprite dialog displays it. Orbit, zoom, Frame and Refresh controls request changes in Blender’s viewport. Keep Blender open with a usable 3D Viewport. This uses images from Blender, not a native Aseprite 3D renderer or editable mesh inside Aseprite. Preview Size controls capture size separately from texture dimensions.

How does animation return to Blender?

Get Animation exports numbered PNGs as a Blender image sequence, or a horizontal sprite sheet plus JSON frame timing and tags. A newly returned sequence may need assigning to your material. Existing nodes referencing that image receive cyclic playback and auto refresh settings. Optional Match Scene FPS applies when every frame has the same duration; unequal durations are recorded in JSON and are not promised to play automatically with exact timing in Blender.

Can it read or write .aseprite documents?

Import an Aseprite File asks connected Aseprite to open a .aseprite or .ase file and export visible layers and a flattened image. The document normally closes afterward; select Leave it open in Aseprite to keep editing it. Blender is not parsing the native format itself. The bridge does not author .aseprite documents or implement tilemap/tileset editing.

What does Get Layers as Maps recognize?

Visible top-level layers or groups are exported to files. Recognized names such as basecolor, roughness, metallic, normal, emission and opacity are matched to the active Blender material. Unrecognized layers remain files on disk. Select the intended mesh/material first and inspect the resulting node connections. Send Mesh for Texturing builds a 2D document from file-backed maps and a locked UV guide; it does not send editable 3D geometry.

Which colors can I exchange?

Send Palette gathers unique Principled BSDF Base Color default values from scene materials, up to 256 colors. It does not sample all texture pixels or export an arbitrary selected Blender palette. Get Palette imports the active sprite palette and replaces the Blender palette named Aseprite, up to 256 colors. Preserve that named palette first if you need its previous colors.

What is the difference between Individual, Team and Studio?

Individual: For 1 person (1 seat). Commercial use included. Team: For a team of up to 6 people (6 seats). Commercial use included. Studio: For a studio of up to 20 people (20 seats). Commercial use included. Need more than 20 seats? Contact us directly. All three options receive the same complete features and downloads. The declared GPL-2.0-or-later software license governs the code; purchase-option wording does not replace it.

How do I fix connection/version problems and get help?

Install or update the companion extension from Blender, restart Aseprite, and confirm its executable path. Product and companion-extension version numbers are separate. If a mismatch warning remains after reinstalling, stop transfers and contact Tachyon Studio through Superhive or Tachyon Discord with the reported versions and error text. Save or close unsaved sprites inside Aseprite rather than forcing them closed. Discord is optional support, not activation.
