Overview

GoboCaster 2 is a Blender add-on designed to create cinematic gobo light projections with a fast, visual workflow. It includes a curated library of high-resolution gobo textures, custom image and video import, tracking lights, Cycles projection support, EEVEE Gobo Mode, light color controls, presets, and quick creative tools for professional lighting setups.

Installation

Extension version Blender 4.2+: Preferences > Extensions > Install from Disk

Legacy version Blender 4.0 / 4.1: Preferences > Add-ons > Install

Quick Start

1. Open the Gobocaster panel in the 3D View sidebar.
2. Add or select a Spot Light.
3. Choose a gobo from the thumbnail library.
4. Adjust scale, rotation, offset, intensity, spot size, and blend.
5. Render in Cycles for physically accurate gobo projection.

Tracking Light

Select an object and click Add Tracking Light. GoboCaster creates a Spot Light aimed at the selected object. When the object moves, the light follows it automatically.

Use the Distance control to move the light closer or farther away while keeping the projection coverage stable.

Custom Gobos

Use Import Custom Gobo to add your own image or video file to the library. Imported gobos are stored in your personal list inside the add-on. Removing an imported item from the list does not delete the original file.

Video Gobos

Video gobos can be selected like regular gobos. Press Play on Blender’s timeline to preview and render animated gobos. GoboCaster does not force playback automatically, so animation remains under your control.

EEVEE Gobo Mode

Cycles supports gobo projection through light nodes. EEVE does not support the same light-node projection workflow, so GoboCaster 2 includes EEVEE Gobo Mode, which creates a shadow-mask style setup for high-contrast gobo effects.

For best results in EEVEE, use black and white or high-contrast gobo textures.

Invert Gobo

Use Invert Gobo to reverse the black and white values of the selected gobo. This is useful when the bright and dark areas need to be swapped.

Volumetric Beam

The Volumetric Beam option adds visible light shafts using Blender’s World volume. This is a global volumetric effect, useful for cinematic atmosphere and visible projection beams.

My Presets

Save your favorite gobo and light setups with My Presets. Presets can store the selected gobo, scale, rotation, offset, light intensity, spot size, blend, and light color.

Pie Menu

Press V to open the GoboCaster pie menu and quickly access common actions such as tracking light creation, Orbit FX, reset controls, and applying gobos to selected lights.
