Laser Projector

Oculis Studio in Presets

What is the difference between the editions?
Free has 8 presets and the whole of the core: Area and Spot projectors, the volumetric beam system with the Beam Fan preset, wavelength colour, placement and the camera look group. Lite ($19) adds the other 25 presets, all four beams presets, the second pattern layer with its five blend modes, both effects stages and saved user presets. Pro ($29) adds the galvo trace, audio reactivity, and the Image / Video preset with text and SVG projection.
Will the animation loop?
Yes, if the frame range matches the preset's own period. Animation runs on seconds rather than frames, so Spiral at Speed 0.5 has a period of exactly 4 s — 96 frames at 24 fps, 100 at 25 — and changing the scene frame rate leaves the motion where it was.
Do I need fog or volumetric scattering?
Not for the pattern — that lands on whatever surface the light hits. For visible shafts in the air you have two options. Volumetric Beams builds the shafts as thin emissive tubes, raycast so each stops exactly where the light lands: seconds to render, works in Eevee, casts no shadows. Add Atmosphere does real scattering, which is accurate and slow, and is still what you want for a patterned beam in air — a grid hanging in haze. Keep its density at 0.01–0.03 and let the denoiser work.
Laser patterns are noisy by nature. How slow is this really?
A patterned light is transparent everywhere except the lines, so most samples land on nothing and only the few that hit a line carry energy — raise the power and you scale that variance with it. Optimise Render for Lasers sets projectors to direct light only, clamps indirect, turns on guided denoising and caps bounces. Then let the mesh beams and hit spots carry the brightness: they are camera-visible geometry and render clean at any intensity.
My lines come out fat and speckled. What did I do wrong?
You are probably on an Area light. At its 1° minimum spread an Area light smears a hairline to about 5 cm at a 3 m throw and is still noisy at 256 samples. A Spot with Blur 0 is a point light, so Cycles evaluates the pattern at one deterministic position per shading point and the same line comes out razor sharp at 4 samples. New projectors default to Spot, and Convert to Spot matches an existing Area's footprint at the current hit distance without losing any settings.
Is this a gobo?
No. There is no mesh anywhere near the beam. The pattern is a node tree on the light itself, so nothing casts a shadow, nothing has to stay out of frame, and the projector moves, parents and animates like the light it is.
Does it work in Eevee?

Half of it. Blender only evaluates light node trees in Cycles, so the projected pattern is Cycles only and no add-on can change that. The Volumetric Beams object is ordinary emissive geometry, so beams, hit spots and dust render in Eevee at Eevee speed. The panel spots a non-Cycles scene and offers a one-click switch.

  • Everything in Lite, plus the production tools. • Galvo Trace: draw the pattern with one moving dot and a fading trail — raster, radial, spiral or linear paths • Audio: bake a sound file and route it to any laser setting • Image and video projection: stills and looping clips • Project Text and Project SVG: type and vector artwork from the panel
