Dovetail Maker — Sliding Dovetails for Multi-Part 3D Prints

LayerMechanic in Modeling

Full description — LayerMechanic — Dovetail Maker (Superhive)

Dovetail Maker builds sliding dovetail joints between the parts of a multi-part 3D print: a male tail on one part, the matching female groove on the other, sized in millimetres.

Seat the parts, select both, put the 3D cursor on the joint, and create the joint. You pick the insertion direction (+X or −X) before anything else, and the joint keeps it: drawn as an arrow in the viewport, stamped in the file, and printed in the assembly map next to the dimensions and fit.

Joints that know which way they assemble:

- Insertion direction as first-class data: stored per joint (DT-001, DT-002, …), drawn in the viewport, listed in the assembly map and the export. - Lead-in entry relief: the tail tip narrows and the groove mouth flares, so the slide starts instead of catching on a sharp edge. - Through grooves, or stopped (blind) grooves that seat the tail in one repeatable position. - One clean anti-reversal option: an asymmetric flank that binds a flipped tail instead of letting it slide home. - Separate side clearance (profile fit classes or custom) and end clearance (extra groove length at the mouth that never widens the groove).

Before Create, the fit preview estimates overlap, opposing slides, wall, breakthrough and stopped seating. Check Joints reports the same honestly — estimates and heuristics are labelled, never sold as a print guarantee. Export writes millimetre STL parts, the manifest and the assembly map.

Blender 5.2 LTS or newer. Tested on 5.2.1 LTS for Windows. Engine 01 v1.0 is vendored inside the package, so there is nothing else to install. GPL-3.0-or-later.
