MHD-Int Black Holes — Real Ray-Traced Lensing of M87*, Sgr A* and Cygnus X-1
Where do the numbers come from?
EHT Collaboration 2019 and 2022, GRAVITY Collaboration (Sgr A*), Miller-Jones et al. 2021 (Cygnus X-1), Luminet 1979, Shakura & Sunyaev 1973. Full list in CREDITS.md.
Does it work with EEVEE?
It has only been tested with Cycles. Materials and lighting were tuned for Cycles.
Can I use the renders commercially?
Yes. Images, animations and scenes you create are yours, including for commercial projects. The script itself is GPL-3.0-or-later.
Do I need an add-on?
No. Everything is procedural and generated by the included script; no add-on and no external textures are required.
Does the black hole spin?
No. It is a Schwarzschild (non-rotating) hole. Real black holes spin, which changes the shadow and the ISCO slightly.
Why does M87* look orange?
The default palette imitates the false colour used by the Event Horizon Telescope. Set DISC_COLOR = "thermal" for blackbody colours.
Is the lensing real or a shader trick?
Real. The script integrates the exact light paths in Schwarzschild spacetime and builds the disc images from them; nothing is faked with a refraction shader.
