Mirror Topology

Edit mirrored topology freely with real-time visual feedback — a faster, more intuitive symmetry workflow that goes beyond Blender’s built-in symmetry tools.

Mirror Topology is a Blender modeling tool designed for artists who need reliable symmetry while actively changing mesh topology. Unlike Blender’s built-in symmetry workflow, which is mainly suited for transforming existing geometry, Mirror Topology remains useful while vertices, edges, and faces are being added, removed, split, merged, or rebuilt.

It is especially useful for character modeling, hard-surface work, retopology, mesh cleanup, and any workflow where the topology keeps evolving while symmetry still needs to be preserved.

Why Not Just Use a Mirror Modifier?

A Mirror Modifier is excellent when you only need duplicated geometry across an axis, but it is not always ideal for meshes that already contain meaningful data on both sides.

In particular, using a modifier-based mirror workflow can replace or regenerate the mirrored side instead of preserving the original data that already exists there. This can be undesirable when the opposite side contains carefully authored UVs or other asymmetric mesh data.

Mirror Topology works with the existing mesh instead of simply generating a duplicated half, allowing you to preserve the original mirrored-side UV layout while still keeping topology edits synchronized.

Key Features

Topology-Aware Mirroring
Continue editing symmetrically even while changing the mesh structure, instead of being limited to simple vertex position edits.

Preserve Existing UVs
Keep the original UV layout on the mirrored side rather than relying on newly generated mirrored geometry.

Visual Mirror Editing
See the mirrored editing relationship directly in the viewport, making symmetry behavior easier to understand and control.

Supports Topology Changes
Designed for operations that add, remove, split, merge, or rebuild geometry while maintaining the corresponding relationship across the mesh.

Better Editing Feedback
The mirrored result remains visually clear during modeling, reducing guesswork and making topology editing feel more direct.

Works With Existing Meshes
Ideal for meshes that already contain UVs, manually edited details, or other data that you do not want to lose by replacing one side with modifier-generated geometry.

A Better Symmetry Workflow

Blender’s default symmetry tools are useful for basic mirrored editing, while the Mirror Modifier is effective for generating symmetrical geometry from one side.

Mirror Topology is designed for a different problem: editing an existing mesh symmetrically while preserving the data that is already there.

You can rebuild topology, change edge flow, add or remove geometry, and continue working across both sides without giving up the original UV layout of the mirrored side.

The result is a more flexible and predictable symmetry workflow for production meshes that cannot simply be reduced to “model one half and mirror the rest.”
