Installation Steps
Download: You will receive a .zip file after purchasing the addon (check your Orders page). Do not unzip this file.
Open Blender: Launch Blender
Go to Preferences: From the top menu, navigate to Edit > Preferences.
-
Install the Addon:
In the Preferences window, click on the Add-ons tab.
Click the Install... button located at the top right (you have to click the arrow then Install from Disk in newer versions).
Find and select the Photrix_v01.zip file you downloaded and click Install Add-on.
-
Enable the Addon:
You can now find the Photrix panel in the 3D Viewport. Just press the 'N' key to open the sidebar, and you'll see a tab named "Photrix".
Inputs
Select a Source Object: In the Photrix panel, click the eyedropper icon next to "Source Object" and select any mesh object in your scene. This is the object that will be copied.
Load a Source Image: Click the folder icon next to "Source Image" to select an image you have already loaded into Blender.
Grid Settings
Vertical Resolution: This determines the number of instances along the vertical (Y) axis. The horizontal resolution is calculated automatically based on the image's aspect ratio to prevent stretching.
Size (in Blender units): This sets the total height of the generated grid in Blender units.
Deformation Properties
Affect Scale: Select whether the image brightness will influence the scale of the instances on the X, Y, or Z axes.
Affect Rotation: Choose the axes (X, Y, or Z) on which the instances will be rotated based on the image's brightness values.
Value Mapping
Invert: By default, darker pixels correspond to minimum values and brighter pixels to maximum values. Checking "Invert" reverses this behavior.
Min/Max Scale: Sets the scale multiplier for the darkest and brightest parts of the image, respectively. A value of 1.0 means the instance will perfectly fit its cell in the grid. A value higher than one can be used to make the instances overlap each other.
Min/Max Rotation: Defines the rotation in degrees that will be applied to instances corresponding to the darkest and brightest pixels.
Clip Dark: Instances will not be generated for pixels with brightness values below this threshold.
Clip Bright: Instances will not be generated for pixels with brightness values above this threshold.
Action Buttons
Generate Grid: The primary operator. It creates the instance grid based on your settings. Running it again will clear the previous results and generate a new grid.
Clear Generated Instances: Deletes all objects in the "Photrix Results" collection and any previously joined meshes, allowing you to start fresh.
Join Instances to Mesh: A fast way to combine all generated instances into a single, unified mesh object. This is useful for improving performance or for further modeling.
Join Instances to Mesh (Boolean, very slow): This operator also joins all instances into one object, but it uses a boolean union operation. This can create a cleaner, manifold mesh but may be very slow, especially with a high number of instances. It is also not very reliable when it comes to coplanar faces. Really only use if you have fewer than a couple hundred faces, and you can expect it to take a minute or two.
