Pose to Print: Turn Rigged Characters Into Print-Ready Miniatures and Figures

Meshwright in Modeling

You have a rigged character with clothes, hair cards and an anime face. You want it on your table as a miniature or on your desk as a figure. Pose to Print does the whole job in one panel: pose it, pick a size and a base, press Make Printable. You get one closed solid with real walls for your printer, eyes engraved on the face, standing on a base with a magnet pocket, as STL and 3MF in millimetres. Your character is never changed.

Five key points

  1. One closed, printable solid from body, clothes, hair cards and accessories: closed in 80 of 80 release test runs (10 characters, 4 sizes, Blender 4.2 and 5.2), checked again by an independent slicer-style check.
  2. Real walls. Single-sided cloth gets its thickness towards the body, so what you see stays put. Thin parts are pushed out to the minimum wall (resin 1.0 mm, filament 1.2 mm), and any spot left is listed and selectable.
  3. Hair that prints. Every strand thinner than your printer's wall is grown evenly to it, so the haircut stays your model's. Or turn the hair into one sculpted mass that leaves the face open.
  4. Eye relief. Anime eyes that exist only in the texture are engraved (or raised) on the face, ready for a wash.
  5. Eight pose presets that work on any humanoid rig (VRoid, VRM, Mixamo, Rigify, Unreal, MakeHuman, MikuMikuDance and more), sizes from 28 mm to 15 cm, round or square bases with magnet pockets.

How it works

  1. Character: select the armature and press the eyedropper.
  2. Pose: Hero stance, Ready, Walk, Wave, Guard, Contrapposto, Sit on base edge or Victory, with a strength slider; or keep your own pose. Restore Pose puts your rig back exactly.
  3. Size: 28, 32, 54 or 75 mm miniature scale, a 10, 12 or 15 cm figure, or your own size.
  4. Base: round 25 to 50 mm or square 25 and 40 mm, 3 to 5 mm high, bevelled, with an optional pocket for 5 x 2, 6 x 3 or 8 x 3 mm magnets.
  5. Make Printable: clothes are pushed out of the body in the pose (the ClipFix clipping fix is built in), every part is fused into one closed solid, thin walls are fixed, the base is fused to the feet.
  6. Report: closed solid, non-manifold edges, thin spots left, size in mm, volume in ml, triangles. Select Thin Spots shows any spot still under the wall.
  7. Export: STL and 3MF in millimetres plus the report, named character_size_pose.

Measured in the release tests

  • 10 characters (seven VRoid samples with their own hair and clothes, a chibi and two MakeHuman bodies in clothes), each at 32, 54 and 75 mm and as a 12 cm figure, on a base with a magnet pocket, in Blender 4.2 and 5.2. Closed solid with no crossing triangles: 80 of 80.
  • Every exported STL and 3MF read back by trimesh as one watertight, consistently wound volume: 160 of 160 files.
  • A VRoid rig renamed to Mixamo, Rigify and MikuMikuDance (Japanese) bone names gives the same closed print as with its own names.
  • Time on a two-core machine: median 79 s per figure with a base, up to 255 s for the biggest sizes.
  • Walls after Make Printable: in the median run 0.16 % of the wall samples are still under the resin wall (small spots, listed and selectable).

Good to know

  • At 28 and 32 mm a real finger is thinner than a printable wall, so hands come out chunky. From 54 mm up hands keep their shape.
  • Supports, hollowing and drain holes are left to your slicer.
  • Print only characters you own or have the rights to print.
  • Coming in 1.1: split the figure into parts with pegs for painting.
