SeamSmith — Seam-Protected Decimate
Turn high-poly organic sculpts, scans, and dense props into clean, game-ready low-polys with UV seams and fine details intact, optional mirror symmetry, and automatic unwrap + pack — in one click.
▲ 1-Click Game-Ready Decimation & Seam Preservation Why SeamSmith?
Most pipelines force you to choose: decimate first (and destroy sharp boundaries / lose tiny features) or unwrap first (and break seams when simplifying). SeamSmith bridges this gap: it calculates feature-critical edges and surface curvature before decimation, guides Blender's decimate modifier using an automated vertex-group protection mask, and automatically applies clean UV unwrapping and packing on the final result.
Decimate modifier. It delivers fast, reliable results for organic sculpts, scans, and props, but for highly complex geometric hard-surfaces, inspecting the preview is always recommended. Key Features
Built on vectorized NumPy routines (using triangle loops and numeric edge adjacency). Runs in well under a second, even on dense sculpts with hundreds of thousands of polygons.
Standard edge angle checks often miss small rounded features. SeamSmith combines two independent protection signals:
- Edge Angle Threshold: Catches distinct sharp features and creases.
- Angle Defect (Discrete Curvature): Sums surface curvature around each vertex ($2\pi - \sum \theta$). Protects compact high-curvature tips like teeth, claws, horns, and thin ridges without turning them into UV cuts.
Heavy protection won't stall your budget. If weighted decimation cannot drop low enough, an automated secondary pass enforces your target face count accurately.
Process one half and mirror seamlessly:
- Local X/Y/Z Axis: Cuts through the mesh bounding-box center automatically (no need to center origin first).
- Custom Visual Plane: Spawns an in-front wireframe plane you can rotate/move freely. Perfect for off-center or posed sculpts. Seam vertices are locked and welded with zero seam gaps.
Automatically generates UV islands and packs them with custom margins. Your source mesh remains untouched — low-polies are output as a new _LOW object.

Quick Start Guide
- Select Mesh: Pick your high-poly model in the viewport. Target Faces auto-fills to ~10%.
-
Preview Seams: Under Seam Detection, click
Preview Seams on Source. If over ~60% is protected, increase the angle. - Protect Details: Enable Detail Protection if the asset has fine protrusions (teeth, claws, thin ridges).
- Generate: Set desired Target Faces & UV Margin, then click Generate Low-Poly.
