Topopen

TopoPen in Modeling

Retopology add-on for Blender 4.5 – 5.2

Draw your edge loops and let TopoPen build the quads

Sketch where the loops should go. TopoPen snaps them to your sculpt, keeps them connected and fills in even quads. You get a normal Blender mesh you can keep editing.

Why draw your retopology instead of automating it

Good topology is about where the loops go. Loops around the eyes and mouth let a face animate. Loops around elbows and knees let joints bend without collapsing. TopoPen gives you that control without retopology being the hated and boring part of your job.

Placing every vertex by hand

✓  Full control over edge flow

✕  Slow and repetitive on large areas

Auto-remeshers

✓  Fast, even quads

✕  No anatomically correct loops

✕  Poor deformation in animation

✕  Lack of symmetry

TopoPen

✓  You decide where the loops go

✓  It snaps, connects and fills the quads

✓  Plain Blender mesh, fully editable

The tools

Seven tools that work together inside Blender's Edit Mode. Press Shift + Q to switch between them.

TopoPen Precise Draw placing individual vertices and quads on a head sculpt

Precise Draw

Build topology one point at a time. Ctrl-click to place vertices on the high-poly surface, extend edges from your current selection and fill in single quads. New points snap to the source and to nearby retopo vertices, so everything stays connected.

Best for: eyelids, lip corners, nostrils, ears and other small areas where each loop has to sit in exactly the right place.

Ctrl + Click
TopoPen Draw sketching guide lines that become a connected quad grid

Draw

Outline an area with four connected guide lines and TopoPen previews it as an evenly subdivided quad grid. Set the density with Quad Size, press Enter to build it, then keep adding cells from any open border.

Best for: cheeks, foreheads, backs, torsos and flat hard-surface panels. Anywhere you need to cover a larger area with even quads.

Enter · build grid Shift + Z · undo last line
TopoPen Edge Flow drawing a quad strip that follows the stroke

Edge Flow

Drag along the surface to lay down a one-quad-wide strip that follows your stroke. Start from an existing border edge to extend your mesh, or redraw a strip to change its path without rebuilding it.

Best for: blocking in the key loops first, such as around the eyes and mouth, along the jaw, over the shoulders and along muscle lines.

TopoPen Move and Relax brushes evening out vertex spacing on the surface

Move and Relax

Two cleanup brushes. Move slides retopo vertices across the source surface without changing the topology. Relax evens out bunched-up or stretched spacing and keeps every vertex projected onto the sculpt.

Best for: tidying an area after you've built it, and smoothing out spacing before you add more loops.

F · radius Shift + F · strength Ctrl + F · falloff
TopoPen Circle Loop wrapping edge loops around fingers, neck and arms

Circle Loop

Wraps a closed edge loop around a rounded form, snapped to the surface. Add loops one after another to build up rings, or extend from a loop you already have.

Best for: fingers, arms, legs, necks and tails, pipes and cables, and the rings around eye sockets and mouths.

Also built in

Symmetry on X, Y or Z

Mirror across the target's local axes. Seam Distance controls when vertices merge on the mirror plane.

Pie Menu

Built-in pie menu for faster tool switching.

Micro mode

For zoomed-in detail: smaller quads, tighter snapping and finer stroke sampling, with its own settings.

Selection actions

Bridge Edges, Circle, Project to Source and brush Pins are in the Actions menu.

Your sculpt is never modified

TopoPen builds on a separate target object. The high-poly source is only read.
