Asymmetrical Character Rig
A production-ready character rig built from scratch in Blender 5.0.1, designed around the challenges of rigging a truly asymmetrical character.
This rig was developed as an extension of the ideas explored in my BCON workshop, It’s Alive!: Rigging Horror Characters Through Controlled Asymmetry & Reuse. Rather than relying on a mirrored character setup, the character and rig were intentionally built to work with asymmetry from the ground up.
Rig Features
Fully asymmetrical character rig
Custom rigging code built from scratch
IK/FK switching
Euler switching for the body, fingers, and thumbs
Custom properties organized primarily on the root bone
Dedicated IK and FK controls
Character rig designed with Unity and Unreal Engine workflows in mind
Production-oriented control setup
Blender 5.0.1
Built to Learn From
This rig is not intended to be a black box.
The setup and code are available for you to inspect and study, making it useful for students, aspiring technical artists, and experienced riggers who want to explore how a fully asymmetrical character can be structured.
Open the file, investigate the controls, examine the rigging logic, and take it apart to understand how the systems work.
If you're learning technical animation, this is an opportunity to study a working asymmetrical rig rather than simply following a tutorial example.
A Collaboration
Rigging, technical systems & custom code: Iliana Ortiz
Character modeling: Jhoao Cundari
The character model and rig were developed as a collaborative project, with both the model and rig built specifically for this production rather than adapted from an existing asset.
Documentation & Support
The purchase includes documentation covering the rig and its intended workflow.
A 12-month support period is also available through Superhive for questions, troubleshooting, maintenance, and updates related to the product.
Support is intended for the included rig and its documentation. It does not include custom rig modifications, new features, or personalized rigging services.
Who Is This For?
This rig is especially suited for:
Technical animation students
Rigging students looking for a more complex example
Technical artists studying rig architecture and scripting
Character artists interested in understanding rigging
Riggers exploring asymmetrical character setups
Artists working toward Unity or Unreal Engine pipelines
Whether you want to use the rig, study its construction, or open it up and investigate how everything works, the goal is the same:
Don't just use the rig. Learn how it works.
