STEPDock — CAD Import for Blender

AS Formworks in Modeling

Does Quads mode create an all-quad model?
No. Quads (Mixed) joins compatible triangles within each CAD surface, and some triangles remain. N-gons (Planar) simplify planar patches while preserving holes; curved surfaces remain triangulated. These modes are not subdivision-ready retopology. Triangles preserve the native tessellation.
What happens when a CAD face cannot be converted?
Automatic isolated retries attempt recovery. If a face still fails, the addon creates an explicitly INCOMPLETE, non-rendering review preview. Incomplete rebuilds preserve the existing model in a separate document. Locators show approximate regions, or an explicitly labelled part-origin fallback. You can accept incomplete geometry or discard the preview. Acceptance never repairs missing surfaces. Repair or re-export unresolved surfaces in the source CAD application for a complete conversion.
How do the three new workflow tools help?
Batch Import STEP processes multiple files sequentially into separate documents, records invalid files and pauses for incomplete-review decisions. Assembly Browser searches part names, frames or isolates a part and restores its original viewport visibility. Mesh Health inspects unique source meshes for open, wire and over-connected edges and zero-area faces, with issue selection and JSON export. Health checks do not modify geometry; open boundaries may be intentional on surface models.
Which file formats and CAD data are supported?
Version 1.0.0 imports STEP (.step / .stp) surface and solid assemblies only. It does not import native SolidWorks, CATIA, Parasolid, IGES, DXF or DWG files. Output is Blender polygon meshes with available names, placement and basic RGB colors; no editable CAD features, CAD UVs, textures, analytic normals, PMI or constraints. Very large mesh construction can pause Blender. The full addon source is GPL-3.0-or-later; the separately downloaded engine retains upstream licenses.
Which Blender versions and operating systems are supported?

Windows x64 only. Tested in Blender 5.0.0 and 5.2.1 LTS, using Python 3.11 and 3.13 respectively. Other systems and Python ABIs are not included. First setup requires internet access to download about 47 MB from official PyPI. Once the engine is prepared, imports work offline. No CAD data is uploaded.
