Complexlab
ComplexLab — Complex Functions, Visualized in Blender
ComplexLab is a Geometry Nodes toolkit for creating, combining and visualizing complex-valued functions directly inside Blender.
Build expressions with nodes, transform them into 3D surfaces, explore their modulus and phase, and generate striking mathematical visualizations without writing code.
What You Can Do
- Visualize complex functions as 3D surfaces
- Use |f(z)| as height and arg(f(z)) as color
- Display topographic / iso-modulus lines
- Combine functions and mathematical operations through Geometry Nodes
- Create custom complex expressions interactively
- Convert complex values between Cartesian and polar forms
- Generate both scientific visualizations and artistic mathematical patterns
Included Nodes
Functions
Cos, Sin, Tan, Cosh, Sinh, Tanh, Exp, Log, Polynomial, Gamma
Operations
Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, Power, Conjugate, Inverse, Modulus, Argument
Tools
ComplexToCart, ComplexToPolar, ShowFloat, ShowVector
Graph
Complex Grid, Complex Visualization
Simple Node-Based Workflow
Complex Grid → Functions / Operations → Complex Visualization
For example, you can build:
f(z) = exp(z) × tan(z)
by simply connecting the corresponding nodes.
4D Information in a 3D World
A complex function normally requires four real dimensions to be represented completely.
ComplexLab brings this information into Blender by using:
X = Re(z)
Y = Im(z)
Z = |f(z)|
Color = arg(f(z))
The phase color mapping follows the complex-function visualization approach described by Frank A. Farris.
Easy Installation
ComplexLab is distributed as a Blender Asset Library.
Simply place the supplied .blend file and blender_asset_cats.txt in the same folder, then add this folder in:
Edit → Preferences → File Paths → Asset Libraries → Add Asset Library
ComplexLab is then ready to use from Blender’s Asset Browser.
Made For
ComplexLab is ideal for mathematical visualization, education, scientific communication, generative art, motion graphics, and anyone who wants to explore the beauty of complex functions inside Blender.
