Paste matches each setting back by name and validates enum values, so anything the target version doesn't recognize is quietly skipped rather than causing an error. Settings shared by both versions come across; the rest are left as they are.

Load & Link stores the file path on the scene and applies it once. With Apply on Open enabled (the default), the .blend re-reads and re-applies that file every time it opens. Apply Now does the same on demand, so several files can share one settings file.
