Gampil Picker

Kapilari in Rigging

Step-by-Step Windows · macOS · Linux

Documentation

A canvas-based rig selection picker that lives inside Blender itself, one process, one event loop. No foreign application window stealing your focus: every Blender shortcut (Space to play, arrow keys to move through frames, I to insert a keyframe, Ctrl+Z to undo) stays active while your cursor is over the picker.

Requirements
Blender 4.0 or newer (tested on the 4.2, 4.5 and 5.2 LTS releases). Windows, macOS and Linux are all supported. The Extension Platform install method requires Blender 4.2+.
Get Started

Installation

Option 1 · Extension Platform (Blender 4.2+)
Drag and drop the gampil_picker.zip file onto the Blender window, or install it through Get Extensions / the Superhive repository.
Option 2 · Manual Install (Blender 4.0+)
Edit → Preferences → Add-ons → Install from Disk… → select the same zip → enable the checkbox.

Both methods use the same zip file, it ships in dual format (an Extension manifest alongside the legacy bl_info), so whichever path you use, you are installing the same code.

First Run

Quick Start

1
Click your rig, then in the N-panel open the Gampil Picker tab and press Set Target Rig, this single click syncs the entire picker to that rig, and can be used anytime to retarget the picker to a different rig.
2
Press Open Picker (New Window) to open the picker as a separate window, or Open Picker Here to open it directly inside the active viewport.
3
Select bones in Pose Mode, right-click on the picker canvas, and choose Add Button (one combined button) or Add Multiple Buttons (one button per bone). Buttons are created already synced to their bones, no modes or apply step required.
Signature Feature

Generate From Rig, Works With Any Rig

This is Gampil Picker's signature feature: automatically building a complete set of picker buttons from whatever rig you are working with, any rig type, whether that's a popular auto-rigging system or a fully custom rig you built yourself.

Select your control bones in Pose Mode, right-click the canvas, and choose Generate From Selected Bones. Every bone gets one button, laid out to match the rig from an orthographic viewing angle, with each control widget's shape converted into an editable base shape.

Tip, filtering out small controls
What gets generated simply follows what you selected, so the fastest way to leave something out is to not select it in the first place. For clutter like tongue or extra eye controls, use Leave Bones Out → By Name Pattern, which accepts patterns like *tongue* or c_eye.?. The default patterns already cover common Auto-Rig Pro and Rigify naming conventions.
Day to Day

Working With The Picker

One Mode for Every Interaction
There is no separate animate mode and build mode in this picker:
  • Click a button to select its bone, hold Shift to add to or toggle the selection.
  • Drag a button to move it anytime. If it is part of a Ctrl selection, the entire group moves together.
  • Drag on empty canvas to box-select bones. Ctrl-click or Ctrl-drag on the canvas selects buttons for cleanup, aligning, distributing, resizing, or deleting them.
  • Right-click brings up a context menu that differs depending on whether you clicked a button or empty canvas space.
  • Press F for Frame View, centering the view on the selected buttons, or all buttons if nothing is selected.
Editing Button Shapes
Hover over a button and press Tab, or right-click and choose Edit Shape. Any shape is automatically converted into an identical bezier curve, ready for further editing. Drag an anchor point to move it, or drag its handle to bend the curve.
Enable X Symmetry through the right-click shape menu, the Picker menu, or the N-panel, every change you make on one side is automatically mirrored to the other, keeping the button shape perfectly symmetrical.
Browser-Style Tabs and Multi-Window
The tab bar above the canvas works just like tabs in a browser: click to switch, the plus button to create a new tab, and right-click to open a full tab menu with rename, close, or open-in-new-window options. New Window lets you open an additional picker window, where each window can display a different tab, for example showing body controls on one monitor and face controls on another at the same time.
Auto Pose Mode and Retargeting
If you click a picker button while still in Object Mode, or while the target rig is not active, the picker automatically activates that rig, enters Pose Mode, and selects the intended bone right away. This can be turned off through the Auto Pose Mode option in the N-panel.
Each tab targets a rig by name rather than a rigid object reference, so the same picker can be reused for a different character just by pressing Set Target Rig again once a different rig is active.
Left and Right Mirror
Mirror Copy and X-Mirror Paste automatically create symmetrical button pairs, position, bezier curve shape, and even bone names ending in .L / .R or _L / _R are adjusted automatically to the opposite side.
Full Control

N-Panel, Button List and Layers

The Button Options tab in the N-panel lists every button on the active tab, ordered from frontmost on canvas to backmost, much like a layer panel in typical design software. Search for a button by its name or its bone's name, and use the arrow column to control draw order.

Scale Selection lets a group of selected buttons be grown or shrunk together around their combined center, keeping the layout's proportions intact. Especially useful when combining the results of multiple Generate From Rig passes, such as body and face generated separately.

The Layers tab provides visibility grouping for buttons, with the same reorder columns for tidying up the layer list without affecting any button's position on the canvas.

Advanced

Command Buttons, Running Python

Buttons in Command mode can run Python code when clicked. Right-click that button and choose Edit Script to open a dedicated editor window, where your code is saved automatically as you type, no need to manually save it.

Be careful
Only run scripts from sources you fully trust. Command buttons execute arbitrary Python inside your Blender session.
Save & Share

Saving and Loading Projects

Every tab is automatically saved inside the .blend file. To share across files or between artists, use the .cpkr format, where one file represents one tab. Save Project saves the currently active tab to its own file, while Open Project opens that file as a new tab without overwriting any existing ones.

Platform Notes

Cross-Platform Support

All of the picker's core functionality, the canvas, buttons, bezier shape editing, tabs, bone selection, Generate From Rig, and the .cpkr format, uses the exact same Blender API on Windows, Linux and macOS, so it behaves identically across all three. The differences below involve features that simply have no official API in Blender at all.

Feature Windows Linux / macOS
Picker window title "Gampil Picker" Default Blender title
Window size & position on open Fitted to screen + UI scale Default Blender size (resizable)
Always on Top (View menu) Available Hidden (OS z-order not controllable)
"Save .cpkr?" prompt on window close Yes Use File → Close Picker instead
Picker never left behind on Blender close Yes Yes
Known Limitation
The Command button's script editor types through Blender's built-in Text Editor, so scripts longer than a single line need the separate editor window to work with comfortably, since Blender itself does not provide a multi-line text widget in the N-panel.
