Wave Upon Wave - Draw With Rotating Unit Vectors in Geometry Nodes (Fourier-Series Implementation)

codesignprojects in Simulations & Effects

Documentation

Overview This Geometry Nodes setup creates a Fourier-series mathematical visualization. It uses a Simulation Zone to stack rotating unit vectors (represented as circles and arrows) end-to-end. As the timeline plays, each vector rotates at a calculated frequency, and a specific chosen vector traces a continuous path in 3D space.

Quick Setup

  1. Apply the Geometry Nodes modifier to any base object.

  2. Locate the Number of vectors frame to define how many rotating circles are generated.

  3. Play the timeline from Frame 0 to watch the simulation generate the wave path.

Customization

  • Visual Elements: The tree instances several elements for the visualization. You can replace the objects in the Arrowhead and Instance Decor frames via their Object Info nodes. The base circles are procedurally generated in The circles frame.

  • Vector Math: The rotation speeds are automatically calculated in the Get speeds by series frame to follow a standard Fourier sequence (0, 1, -1, 2, -2, 3, -3...).
