Tropical Trees: user guide

Tropical Trees is a library of 60 realistic tropical trees for architectural renders: 15 species, 4 variants each, at real-world scale, with photo bark and leaves, flowers and fruit where the species has them, and a wind modifier that animates every tree with no keyframes.

  • Blender version: 4.5 LTS. Made and tested in Blender 4.5.
  • Render engines: Cycles and EEVEE.
  • No add-on, no Python, no external files. Every texture is packed inside the .blend.

Install

Option A, just open it. Open TropicalTrees.blend. The demo scenes render as they are. Copy any tree into your own file with Ctrl+C / Ctrl+V.

Option B, as an asset library (recommended).

  1. Unzip the download and keep the TropicalTrees folder together (the .blend and the catalog file).
  2. Edit > Preferences > File Paths > Asset Libraries > click + and choose the TropicalTrees folder.
  3. Set Import Method of that library to Append (Reuse Data), so materials and textures load once however many trees you place.
  4. In any file, open an Asset Browser editor, pick the Tropical Trees library and drag a tree into the viewport.

Placing trees

A tree dropped from the Asset Browser arrives as a collection instance: one object that shows the whole tree. Copies made with Shift+D are instances too, so a hundred palms cost little more memory than one. Rotate and scale them freely; a scale between 0.8 and 1.2 gives more variety from the same tree.

To edit a tree (delete a frond, change a material for one tree only), select the instance and use Object > Apply > Make Instances Real.

Wind

Every part of every tree carries a Wind modifier (Geometry Nodes, node group "Tropical Wind"). Press play and the trees move. Taller parts bend more, so trunks stay planted while crowns sway, and leaves get a quick flutter on top.

Control What it does
Strength How far the tree bends. 0 keeps it perfectly still.
Gust Speed How fast the gusts travel through the tree.
Flutter Small, quick movement of the leaves. Set on the leaf objects only.
Plant Height Height of the tree in metres, already set for each tree. The bend scales with it. Leave it as it is.
Direction Direction the wind blows towards.

The wind is sampled where a tree stands, so real trees in different places sway out of step. Instances of the same tree move together; for a field of independent trees use Make Instances Real.

Rendering

  • Cycles gives the best result: light shines through leaves and fronds, and shadows are soft.
  • EEVEE works too, for quick previews and animations.
  • In big scenes, keep trees as instances: memory stays low however many you place.

How these trees were made

The trees come from our own procedural generators (branching, palm fronds, leaf placement), written with the help of an AI coding assistant. Textures are real photographs (ambientCG, CC0) or procedural shaders. No AI image generation was used. Art direction and review are done by a person.
