Anynode Preview – Geometry Nodes & Shader Preview

Unik Studio in Rendering

How do I change a material without opening the shader editor?
Press `Alt+M` in Object Mode, or use **Show Material in Viewport**. A compact HUD follows the active object with Colour, Hue, Sat, Brightness, Roughness, Metallic and Normal. The controls are discovered from the material that is actually connected, not a guessed list, and every row has its own reset.
What is Before / After?
A wipe between the node's input geometry and its output, in the same place at the same scale, so the change a node makes is one picture rather than two remembered ones. Drag the boundary to move it; `Escape` puts it back. A node with nothing upstream — a primitive, a Group Input — says so and keeps showing its output. It is off by default because it costs a second evaluation per update.
Why would I use the 3D viewport overlay instead of the cards?

Show In Viewport draws the active node's output onto the object its modifier belongs to, at real scale, correctly occluded by the rest of the scene. Fields draw as a heatmap on the geometry itself, with a caption naming the node and the range the heatmap is normalised against.

How do I read an actual number off a field? Click the field overlay in the viewport. The heatmap says where a value is high; the reading says how high, here. It is the same number the range badge is built from, formatted the same way, and it stays pinned to the point it was taken at as you orbit. Clicking off the overlay, or any change that re-evaluates it, clears the reading. It is a plain left click that is always passed through, so your selection and tools are unaffected.

Can I orbit a preview card?
Yes. Middle-drag orbits, Shift+middle-drag pans and Ctrl+middle-drag zooms — the same gestures as the 3D view. `Escape` puts it back, and Reset Card AnglE restores all three. Nothing is re-evaluated; only the camera moves over buffers already held. A framed card is never written to the shared thumbnail cache, so it cannot pollute anyone else's preview.
What does clicking a node actually do?
Three things in one gesture: it previews that node, rings its card so the click has a visible answer even when Preview All has already filled every node, and highlights the chains passing through it by veiling everything else. Blender's own wires are never redrawn. Focus Opacity sets the veil strength; at zero, highlighting is off and you get plain previews.
Do previews work inside Simulation and Repeat zones?

Yes, including nested zones, zone input nodes, and branches that do not feed the zone output yet. Blender forbids a link leaving a zone, so the preview leaves through the zone's own output: the card shows the value carried out of the last iteration, or the current frame for a Simulation.

Preview Selection is the one exception — it does not support nodes inside a Simulation or Repeat zone yet, and says so rather than showing something wrong.

Does it work offline?
Yes. It runs locally inside Blender, requests no network permissions and bundles no binaries — it is pure Python. Its background workers are additional Blender processes on your own machine.
Which Blender version do I need?
Blender 4.5 or newer. It is verified against 4.5 LTS, 5.1 and 5.2, not just declared compatible.
Does it change my node tree?

No. Previews are evaluated against a temporary copy of the tree or object, never your real graph. Temporary trees are torn down after the render. The only things that write to your graph are the ones you explicitly ask for —

Add Color Adjust, applying a Visual Explorer tile,

Align Nodes — and every one of them is a normal undo step.

What is AnyNode Preview?

A Blender 4.5+ add-on that shows what every node in a Geometry Nodes, Shader or World tree actually produces. Cached preview cards sit on the nodes themselves, the same result can be drawn onto the real object in the 3D viewport, and a floating HUD art-directs the material where you are already looking.

It is for artists who are tired of dragging a Viewer node around a graph to find out what one step did.
