Voxelvision 4 (Formerly Blockblender)

Erasers45-Studios in Modeling

Do I have to own a legally purchased version of Minecraft?
  1. Yes, with the newest version of BlockBlender you are required to have a legally obtained copy of Minecraft installed on your computer.
  2. BlockBlender V2.1 will NEVER ask you about sensitive data such as login data. Never share this data with anyone!
  3. BlockBlender requires the .jar file of your installed Minecraft version currently 1.21.5 or newer in order to create the texture set.
Do I need to use Blender?

Yes, BlockBlender V2 is made specifically for Blender. Make sure you’re using the Blender version specified on the product page.

For the latest BlockBlender version you will have to use Blender 4.5, some features won’t work otherwise!

How to install the addon?
In the documentation, you will find guidelines to install the addon as an extension!
How do I use VoxelVision III?

The easiest way to learn how to use BlockBlender is by watching the video tutorials about the addon on YouTube BlockBlender V2 Tutorial. Older tutorials of BlockBlender 1.4-1.5 with different tips and tricks from which some are still relevant: How to use BlockBlender 1.5 or BlockBlender 1.41.

On YouTube, the videos have chapter markers in the video description if you need to jump to a specific part. If you are using YouTube for desktop, you can also view the transcript and search it with ctrl F.

You can also ask for help on my Discord server, but please check this FAQ page first. There is a good chance one of them will solve your problem.

Why do I need to install required python modules in Blender?
  1. If you see a button that requires you to install python modules you can simply click on it and it will automatically install two python libraries in you Blender directory.

  2. Blender comes with a limited palette of python modules when you download it. BlockBlender V2 however needs two more python libraries: “pillow” and “mcschematic”. “pillow” is used to calculate and analyze images in a more efficient way and “mcschematic” is required for the schematic export functionality.
Why do I need to create a texture dataset?
  1. If you see a button that requires you to create a texture dataset you can simply click on it in order to create the block texture set. This step was introduced in the new version of BlockBlender V2.1 to avoid issues when shipping Minecraft textures to users that do not own Minecraft themself.

  2. After clicking the button a new window will popup for you to select a Minecraft game version file. Select the 1.21.5 or newer .jar file and click on create image strip. You can find your game files in your Minecraft installation folder. Usually something like this: “C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\versions\1.21.5\1.21.5.jar”

If you don’t have the Minecraft version folder for 1.21.5 it will be created automatically when you create a new installation inside your Minecraft launcher and have started the game once with this game version
  3. When everything worked out you should now see the BlockBlender V2.1 interface!
What versions of Blender can I use?
With each new Blender version the internal API is changed. Therefore only Blender 4.5.x is supported for BlockBlender V2.1
Model disappears after converting model to blocks?

There are a few reasons why blocks might not appear:

  1. You might have the wrong Blender version Make sure you are using at least Blender 4.5 or BlockBlender won’t work.
  2. Your model might be too small If your model is smaller than 1 meter, than it is too small for blocks to appear. It needs to be larger than 1 cubic meter. Try the following:
    a. Scale your model with “s” and apply the scale with “crtl+a”
    b. Scale your model in edit mode
    c. Make sure the dimensions that you can see in the BlockBlender n-panel are within a reasonable size. 1 m in Blender = 1 block!

    d. Toggle dimensions and world direction display options to get a better understanding of your model scale:

  3. Your model might have a hole in it or be too thin
    a. Play around with the voxelization method as they use a different approach to turn your model into blocks.

    b. You can still turn it into blocks by adding exterior thickness from the modifier p or by using a solidify modifier ABOVE the BlockBlender V2 modifier.

    c. Or you can close the hole by selecting the edges around it and pressing F to create a face.
Parts of my model are not filled with blocks or aren’t appearing?

Your model might have a hole in it or be too thin:

  1. Play around with the voxelization method as they use a different approach to turn your model into blocks.

  2. You can still turn it into blocks by adding exterior thickness from the modifier p or by using a solidify modifier ABOVE the BlockBlender V2 modifier.

  3. Or you can close the hole by selecting the edges around it and pressing F to create a face.
How do I exclude blocks or change block categories?

You have a lot of different options in this regard:

  1. Filter for blocks of different Minecraft versions
  2. Filter for blocks of different preset categories
  3. Create your own block palette with the custom block selection

  4. Exclude blocks you do not want in your build specifically by using the “Mask Out Selected Blocks” option in the custom block selection. Blocks that are within the second column will be excluded from your build.
  5. Search for specific blocks by opening the small dropdown menu at the bottom of the custom block selection section.

Schematic file failed to load when using it in Minecraft?
  1. BlockBlender uses the python library called “mcschematic” to export blocks to a schematic file.
  2. It will ALWAYS export a .schem file no matter which Minecraft version you have selected (this also applies for 1.12 and below)
  3. The schematic file will be written in “Sponge 2” so make sure you are using the correct command when using Worldedit or FAWE: „//schem load sponge.2“
How do I change the position of blocks without moving the model?

If you don’t like how the blocks are places, you can move the origin point or move your model in edit mode.

Block orientation is not correct or facing the wrong direction?
You need to apply your rotation. Select you object and press ctrl A, apply rotation. Or press the Apply Scale and Rotation button in the BlockBlender n-panel.
What if my model doesn’t use an image texture or has multiple textures?

There are a few solutions:

  1. If your model uses multiple image textures, you can use up to 10 of them by placing them in the image slots in case they are not applied automatically, just make sure you put them in the same order they appear in the shader tab. You can change the order of the images using the arrows on the right, if you’d like to skip any of them.

  2. You need to bake your images if:
    a. you have more than 10 images
    b. you want to turn multiple images into 1 image
    c. your model doesn’t use image textures and instead has procedural textures. See also the respective chapter in the BlockBlender V2 Tutorial.
