Messy Model Rigid Rigger

astute industries in Rigging

What is Messy Model Rigid Rigger?
Messy Model Rigid Rigger (MMRR) is a Blender toolkit for rigging models made from rigid parts. It helps you generate a starting armature or bind geometry to an existing skeleton, then refine bone placement, hierarchy and mesh ownership using manual helpers.
Is this a fully automatic, one-click rigger?

No. MMRR automates parts of bone placement and rigid binding, but you still choose the main moving parts, refine pivots and parenting, and test the result. Geometry analysis cannot reliably determine a model’s intended mechanical joints.

What are the typical use cases for this add-on?

This add-on is targeted for users that wish to rig and animate mechanical models.

Typical models include:

  • Robots
  • Robotic Arms
  • Vehicles
  • Machines
  • Rigid Props
Can I use it for organic characters, wires or other flexible parts?
Unfortunately no. MMRR’s automatic binding is designed for rigid parts. Skin, cables, hoses and other flexible geometry still need suitable manual weighting or another deformation workflow. A model can contain both, but its flexible regions need separate attention.
Is MMRR only for robots?
No. It is intended for rigid-part models such as machines, vehicles, mechanical props, armour and modular assemblies. Suitability depends on how the parts need to move, not whether the model is a robot.
Can it work with one combined mesh object?
Yes, when that object contains disconnected mesh islands. Enable Consider Mesh Islands Separately to treat those parts individually without separating the object. You can then simplify the generated rig by merging accessory bones into the main bones.
Does “rigid rigging” mean rigid-body physics?
No. MMRR creates armature-based rigid-part bindings. It does not simulate collisions, prevent parts from intersecting or automatically configure mechanical physics.
Do I need previous rigging experience?
Basic Blender knowledge is recommended: selecting objects and bones, identifying the active selection, and switching between Object, Armature Edit and Pose Modes. MMRR reduces repetitive work, but you still need to judge pivots, ownership and movement.
Do I need to clean up my model before I use this add-on?
Not extensively. MMRR is designed for cluttered mechanical models, you don’t need to remove small parts or manually combine them into tidy groups.

Basic cleanup mainly concerns model data: use local, editable polygon meshes and check for unwanted bindings or Armature modifiers from previous rigs. Make shared mesh data single-user, giving each object an independent copy so binding changes don’t unintentionally affect linked duplicates. Make sure to save a backup before changing existing rigging data.
Why is the automatic rig constructor is taking so long?
Construction time depends on the model’s polygon count, number of objects or mesh islands, and analysis settings. MMRR analyses accessories as well as bone hosts, so a small number of hosts does not necessarily mean a quick construction.

Start with the default sampling settings, disable Consider Mesh Islands Separately when whole-object treatment is sufficient, or use the faster PCA-aligned bounding box option.

You can press Esc to request cancellation, but it takes effect between safe processing stages rather than immediately.
Does MMRR upload my models or require cloud processing?
MMRR runs locally and do not upload your model or require a cloud service.
Is AI involved in automatic rig construction?
No, the rig construction is derived through spatial data provided by the model's geometry. The add-on calculates where it should place the bones and which meshes it should bind to by itself.
The add-on is reporting an error that prevents me from working on the rig, how do I fix it?

First, save a separate .blend backup and read the full error message. Many errors are safeguards that prevent changes to the wrong rig or incompatible data.

Common examples include:

  • No bone host selected: For a new rig, select at least one main mesh and use Add Selected Meshes - +. The host must belong to the current source collection.
  • Incorrect mode or selection: Follow the tool’s documented mode and selection requirements. For mesh-to-bone tools, choose the bone first, return to Object Mode, select the meshes, then make the armature active.
  • Shared mesh data: Make the source meshes single-user using Object → Relations → Make Single User → Object & Data, then validate again.
  • Shared armature data: Review the Make Independent and Continue confirmation. This creates independent armature data so other rigs sharing it are not edited.
  • Mesh already belongs to another rig: Check its Armature modifier. If that binding is intentional, do not clean it. To reassign the mesh, back up the file and remove its existing managed binding using Remove Messy Model Rigid Rigger Binding from Selected.
  • Old bindings remain after deleting a rig: Choose the affected source collection and use Clean Orphaned Source Bindings. Live or otherwise protected rig references are deliberately preserved.
  • Cache cannot load: Check for source-geometry changes or animation data on the current rig. Rig Cache requires compatible geometry and does not support switching an animated rig. Preserve the current file rather than deleting data to bypass the check.
  • Too many hosts for existing bones: In Accessory Groups + Binding reconstruction mode, reduce the host candidates so they do not outnumber the rig’s deform bones.

For more details, run Validate Source or the appropriate Validate Rig button. Open any named MMRR_Validation_… report in Blender’s Text Editor.

If the problem persists, contact us through Superhive with the exact error, Blender/MMRR versions, reproduction steps and an Export Support Diagnostics report. Avoid emergency cleanup unless its scope matches the problem or support recommends it.
