Snapshots - Freedom to Experiment
What's the difference between Snapshots and Blender's regular Undo?
Blender's Undo is temporary; it's a history of your recent actions that gets cleared when you close the file. Snapshots are permanent, lightweight backups of your entire project that are saved to your computer. You can close and re-open your project days later and still restore anything from a snapshot you created.
What happens if I send a file to a teammate or render farm that doesn't have Snapshots installed?
Your file opens and renders completely normally. There is zero vendor lock-in. Snapshots never packages your work into proprietary containers or custom file formats. Anyone opening your file on a machine without the add-on will not experience missing-plugin warnings, missing datablocks, or broken scene structures.
Does Snapshots modify my scene data, alter my models, or bloat my file?
No. Snapshots only adds minimal metadata to your active scene to keep track of versions. It never alters your actual models, animation keys, materials, or scene hierarchy behind your back. Because your history and backup states are stored independently in a separate directory, it does not make your main working file any bigger, heavier, or bulkier. Your project file remains lean, clean, and uncorrupted.
Where are my snapshots saved?
By default, they are saved in a hidden folder named .snapshots right next to your main .blend file. You can also set a single, global directory for all your snapshots in the addon's preferences (Edit > Preferences > Add-ons > Snapshots).
Does Snapshots conflict with cloud storage (Dropbox, Google Drive) or studio version control (SVN, Git)?
Not at all. Snapshots is designed to play well with existing pipelines and studio infrastructure. It works seamlessly alongside cloud sync services like Google Drive, Dropbox, and OneDrive, as well as version control systems like SVN or Git. Think of Snapshots as an instant, granular safety net right inside Blender that operates smoothly without getting in the way of your external backup tools.
What happens if I rename my object or data?
Renaming objects, materials, meshes, or any other data-block is perfectly safe. You can rename things as often as you like, and the addon will always be able to find the correct item to restore.
Does this addon slow down Blender?
No. The addon is extremely lightweight. It only runs when you interact with it (creating, restoring, or viewing snapshots). It does not perform any background tasks that would impact Blender's performance.
What happens if I delete the addon? Are my snapshots safe?
Your snapshots are completely safe. They are just files on your computer. If you reinstall the addon later, it will find and display them again automatically.
Can I move my project and its snapshots to another computer?
Yes. As long as you copy the entire project folder, including the hidden .snapshots sub-folder, everything will work perfectly on another machine with the addon installed. If you're using a global directory, make sure to copy that folder as well.
How do you guarantee stability across different Blender releases?
Every release is validated against a comprehensive automated test suite consisting of over 100 tests run across all supported Blender versions. This ensures that new Blender updates never compromise the reliability of your backups or restore operations.
