Tatters - Cloth Tearing
Will the files work on a computer without Tatters?
Yes. The torn cloth is geometry nodes saved in the .blend, so it opens and renders on any Blender 4.2 or newer. You only need Tatters to draw new tears.
Why don't I see the burns?
Burns and wear are drawn by the material. Give the cloth one of Tatters' fabric materials, or switch on Edge shading for your own material (one click). In Solid view you only see the holes.
My computer is not fast. Will it be slow?
New cloth starts in Light, which keeps the heavy detail only around the damage. Alpha adds no geometry at all. The sidebar shows what each mode costs on your cloth, and on my PC a garment with 20 tears updates in about 0.1 to 0.3 seconds.
Can I use it for games?
Yes: Bake Game-Ready, then Export Game Mesh (FBX or GLB, with settings for Unreal, Unity or Godot). You get your garment's own topology with the holes cut and PNG maps for opacity, normal, colour, char, wear and edge.
Does it work on animated or simulated cloth?
Yes. Tatters sits first in the modifier stack, so a deformer or a Cloth simulation after it moves the torn cloth. For a garment an Armature moves, Follow Deformation keeps the tears in place (on by default). Animate Tearing makes rips run and holes grow as the shot plays.
Can I change a tear after I've drawn it?
Yes, any time. Select it in the TEARS list or in the viewport and change its width, opening, curl, threads or burn. A tear is a small object: move, rotate, scale or delete it, and Ctrl+Z works as usual.
Does it change my mesh?
No. Tatters works as one geometry nodes modifier on top of your cloth. Your mesh, UVs and materials stay as they are; Apply Tears makes the damage permanent only when you choose to.
Blender 5.2 has cloth physics that can tear. Why Tatters?
The physics solver tears cloth where a simulation pulls it apart, after you build the node setup. Tatters doesn't simulate: you draw the damage exactly where you want it, pick what kind it is (a rip, a burn, a bullet hole), and get loose threads, curled lips and char that a solver doesn't make. Both can live in one file: Tatters works on simulated cloth too.
