HeadWrap: Automatic Head Retopology With Eyes and Teeth

Meshwright in Modeling

A clean head for every head, in one click

Pick a head mesh: a 3D scan, a sculpt or an AI-generated head. Press Wrap Head. HeadWrap finds the face by itself, fits a clean template head onto it and adds eyeballs, teeth and a tongue. No points to place by hand, no cleanup of the eyes and mouth.

You get the same topology and the same UVs every time: 4,262 vertices with edge loops around the eyes and the mouth, ready for shape keys, rigging, games and texturing.

How it works

  1. Finds the face. HeadWrap renders your head inside Blender and finds 478 face points on it, in a few seconds. For stylized heads, click 10 points yourself (Guided mode).
  2. Wraps. The template is fitted onto your head's surface in about 10 seconds. On our 12 test heads the average gap was 0.7 to 0.9 mm at life size, and 0.3 to 0.6 mm on the face.
  3. Done. A new head in its own collection, with eyes, teeth, tongue, a mouth inside and UVs. Your own head is not changed.

What you get

  • Clean topology: quads with edge loops around the eyes and the mouth, closed at the neck. Same vertex order on every head (at the same detail level), so shape keys and weights made for one wrapped head fit the others.
  • Eyes, teeth, tongue and the mouth inside. Each eyeball is its own object with its origin in the eye center, ready to turn.
  • The same UVs on every head. Textures, decals and materials made for one head fit them all.
  • Bake Texture (Full): moves your head's color onto the clean UVs, with a normal map for the fine detail.
  • Detail levels (Full): Base (4,262 vertices), Medium (17,000) and High (68,000). The extra vertices follow your head's surface.
  • Open Neck: removes the neck cap, for joining the head to a body.
  • Any size, any direction. No need to apply transforms. Modifiers and shape keys are used as they show in the viewport.
  • Next step: shape keys. With our add-on FaceKeys installed (sold separately), one more click makes all 52 ARKit face shape keys on the wrapped head.
  • Works offline. Pure Python: one zip for Windows, macOS and Linux. Nothing is downloaded and nothing is sent anywhere.

Tested

  • 12 test heads with a different topology from the template: 6 heads made like AI-generated heads and scans (eyes fused into the head, the mesh remeshed and cut down to 60,000 triangles), 4 heads of the ICT Face Model (another mesh with separate eyes, a long neck and shoulders), a smoothed copy, and a copy turned 90 degrees and scaled 100 times.
  • Average gap between the wrapped head and the original: 0.7 to 0.9 mm at life size (0.3 to 0.6 mm on the face). Eyes and lips clean on every test head.
  • Installs and runs in Blender 4.2 LTS and 5.2 LTS.

Good to know

  • Made for realistic and semi realistic heads. Stylized heads work through Guided mode, but very cartoony proportions may not fit well.
  • The template is a bald adult head. Hair that is part of your head mesh (common in AI-generated heads) becomes part of the head shape: remove it first if you can.
  • Ears keep the template's clean shape. Their size and place follow your head, their folds do not.
  • The template's neck ends just below the jaw: longer necks and shoulders are left out. To join a body, use Open Neck and bridge the edge loops.
  • Small folds can show up where your head differs a lot from the template, most often in the ears. The Smooth brush fixes them.
